Kanda Poha is a yummy, tummy-filling snack from Maharashtrian cuisine.
“Poha” is the Maharashtrian name for “flattened or beaten rice” and “kanda” for “Onion“, so the name “Kanda Poha“. There are different variations in which it can be made, but the most popular include onion or potato (Batata Poha)or both onion and potato in addition to some herbs and spices.
Poha is a popular breakfast dish not only in Maharashtra but also in other parts of the world. It is a tasty, quick-to-make & tummy-filling snack usually preferred with a cup of hot tea.
However, in M.P (Madhya Pradesh) and some parts of northern India, poha is eaten with hot jalebies and “Poda – Jalebi” is a popular combination of breakfast in these areas.
This recipe is of Kanda Poha or Onion Poha made with flattened rice, onion, and peanuts along with some herbs & spices. It is a very easy and quick-to-make recipe that requires very little effort and knowledge of cooking.

Secret Tips for Delicious Kanda Poha
- Type of poha:- there are different varieties of poha available in the market like thick poha, thin poha, paper poha etc. Always use the thick one for making non-sticky and delicious poha. If you use the thin one then it might get sticky and mashy.
- How to wash the poha:- simply rinse it in running water like rice and keep it aside for at least 5-10 minutes.
- How to cook:- the best poha is always the one cooked in steam so, once everything is done just slow down the flame/switch it off, cover the lid and let the poha cook for about 2-3 minutes slowly in that steam.
Ingredients:-
- Poha – 2 cups
- Peanuts/Moongfali – a hand full
- Onion / Pyaz – 2 medium size sliced/chopped
- Green chilli/ Hari mirch – 2-3 chopped
- Mustard seeds/ Rai – 1 tsp
- Fennel seeds/ Sauf – 1 tsp
- Curry leaves – 5-6
- Fresh coriander leaves – for garnishing
- Turmeric/ Haldi powder – 1/4th tsp
- Salt – to taste
- Oil – 2-3 tbsp
Method:-
How to make Kanda Poha | Delicious Onion Poha
- Rinse the poha in running water 2-3 times and keep it aside.
- Heat the pan and add oil to fry the peanuts.
- Fry the peanuts for 2-3 minutes and keep them aside.
- Now to make the poha we need only 2-3 tbsp of oil. So, if you feel that the oil is more in your pan after frying the peanuts, just reduce the quantity and add mustard seeds.
- Add fennel seeds.
- Mix it and let it crackle.
- Now, we will add the green chillies and curry leaves.
- Let them also crackle for a few seconds until we get the nice aroma of the curry leaves.
- As you feel the aroma add the chopped onions.
- Sauté the onions until slightly golden brown.
- Now add poha, turmeric powder and salt.
- Mix it well.
- Cover the lid and cook on low flame or no flame for 2-3 minutes.
- Now add the fried peanuts and chopped coriander leaves.
- Mix it well.
- Serve it on a plate and garnish it with bhujiya sev and coriander leaves.
- Delicious Kanda poha is ready to be served. You can have it with a cup of tea or coffee.
