Sabudane ki kheer or Tapioca Pudding is a sweet and creamy dessert made with sago, milk and sugar. It is a popular Indian dish made on Hindu fasting days.
Sabudane ki kheer is generally made during the 9 days of Navratri Festival or on any other fasting/ vrat or upvas days.
Sabudana also known as tapioca or sago, are small round-shaped pearls made from starch obtained from the roots of the cassava plant.
It is almost pure starch and doesn’t have many health benefits, but it is gluten-free and can be used as an alternative for wheat- or corn-based products.
Sabudana is also known by other names in different parts of the country, for example- sabbakki in Kannada, javvarisi in Tamil, sagubiyyam in Telugu and chowari in Malayalam.
Being gluten-free, Sabudana is used for making different fasting snacks like Sabudana khichdi, Sabudana Vada, Sabudana namkeen, Sabudana papad etc.
About this Recipe
My Sabudana kheer recipe is very simple and quick to make. It is one of my favourite kheer recipes from childhood as I have always liked eating those pearls. 🙂
I have learned this recipe from my mum and so it is my mom’s recipe which I am going to share with you guys.
In this recipe, we will first soak the sabudana for about 1-2 hours and then simmer it in milk until we get a thick and creamy consistency.
The kheer is then sweetened with sugar or sugar-free sweetener whatever you prefer, after which it is flavoured with cardamom powder and garnished with dry fruits. it can be served hot or chilled whatever you prefer.
The whole step-by-step recipe with images at each step is discussed below: –
