Shahi tukda or shahi tukra also known as “double ka meetha” is a popular Indian dessert that originated in the Mughal era.
Shahi tukda – “Shahi” means “royal,” and “tukda” means “piece,” so this dessert is considered to be a royal treat in India.
It is a rich and indulgent dessert made with bread, milk, sugar, and nuts. This Shahi Tukda or Shahi bread pudding is a very popular dessert from the Hyderabadi cuisine, especially during the holy month of Ramadan and Eid.
This Royal Mughlai Dessert – Shahi Tukda along with Rabri is very popular in North India and is often served at weddings, festivals, and special occasions.
Its combination of crispy fried bread, fragrant syrup, creamy rabri, and crunchy nuts makes it a dessert fit for royalty.
So, without wasting any time let’s begin with the recipe.
How to make Shahi Tukda| Double ka Meetha| Quick 15-minute dessert. Step by Step recipe with images at each step: –
Ingredients: –
- Bread – 4-5 slices
- Sugar – 1 cup
- Water – 1 cup
- Oil for frying
- Cardamom powder
- Dry fruits of your choice (chopped)
Method: –
Preparing the sugar syrup: –
- Take a pan and add a 1:1 ratio of Sugar and water i.e. 1 cup water & 1 cup sugar.
- Switch on the flame and keep mixing until the sugar dissolves.
- Bring it to a boil.
- Add the cardamom powder and mix it.
- Let it boil for 4-5 minutes. (note:- do not make the syrup too thick.)
- After about 5 minutes our sugar syrup is ready.
Preparing the toast: –
- Cut the bread into small pieces (square or rectangle whatever you prefer).
- Heat oil or ghee in a kadhai or pan for frying the bread.
- Add 2-3 bread pieces at a time.
- Fry from both sides until crisp and golden.
- The toast is ready.
- In the same way, fry all the bread pieces and keep them on a paper tissue to remove excess oil.
Making the shahi tukda:-
- Now dip the fried bread pieces one by one into the sugar syrup.
- Coat the toast (fried bread) with sugar syrup nicely from both sides.
- The shahi toast is ready.
- Coat all the pieces in the same way.
- Arrange the soaked bread pieces in a serving dish.
- Pour the creamy rabri (thickened milk) on top.
- Garnish with chopped nuts and serve it right away or chilled whatever you prefer.
- The royal Shahi tukda or Double ka Meetha is ready.
