Poha is a popular North Indian breakfast dish originating in Maharashtra but is enjoyed across the country. It is a simple and easy-to-make recipe that gets ready in just 10-15 minutes.
“Poha” is the Maharashtrian name for “flattened or beaten rice“ and “batata” for “potato“, so the name “Batata Poha“. There are different variations in which it can be made, but the most popular include onion (Kanda Poha) or potato or both in addition to some herbs and spices.
It is a tasty, quick-to-make & tummy-filling snack usually preferred with a cup of hot tea. In M.P. (Madhya Pradesh) and some parts of northern India, poha is often eaten with hot jalebies (Indian Sweet) and “Poha – Jalebi“ is a popular combination of breakfast in these areas.
Poha is a vegan & gluten-free breakfast with very less calories and is best for someone who is calorie conscious but yet wants to eat something delicious without any guilt.
In this recipe, I am going to make Batata poha i.e. flattened rice with potatoes, onions, and peanuts along with some herbs and spices. It is a very easy and quick-to-follow recipe that requires very little effort and knowledge of cooking.

Secret Tips for Delicious Poha
- Type of poha:-there are different varieties of poha available in the market like thick poha, thin poha, paper poha etc. Always use the thick one for making non-sticky and delicious poha. If you use the thin one then it might get sticky and mashy.
- How to wash the poha:-simply rinse it in running water like rice and keep it aside for at least 5-10 minutes.
- How to cook:-the best poha is always the one cooked in steam so, once everything is done just slow down the flame/switch it off, cover the lid and let the poha cook for about 2-3 minutes slowly in that steam.
